Missoula makes Outside’s list of “Best River Towns in America”

I like this piece, because much of it is what I love about Missoula.

But another marvelous thing that makes Missoula special is simply: the weirdos. The artsy people. The gays. The liberals. The punks. I once heard Missoula rattled off on a list of small hippie towns with a rad underground, like Asheville, N.C., Bellingham, Wash., Madison, Wisc., Ashland, Ore., etc. Considering our comparative geographic isolation–Montana is a long-ass drive from anywhere–that’s something.

I love the sunny, farmers market-y side of Missoula as much as I love the underbelly. The dark basement shows, the dive bars, the weird people making loud noises with guitars and other instruments. That part gets makes fewer Outside magazine listings–and that is just fine by me.
