First things first: v. interesting news item about the former singer for Gwar, Vulvatron, beating the crap out of an (alleged) jerk.
On to other news:
This post on dealing with anxiety at DIY punk shows from The World According to Nouns popped up on my Twitter. I’m not sure about the whole kava thing, since I gather that it can be hard on your liver, but overall, this seems like some pretty sensible advice, including, “There may be times when you need to take a break and you don’t have anyone to talk to or there’s a gap between bands and WHAT DO YOU DO? Just read something. I’ve been bringing books to shows since like 1992 and it’s because I’m so scared of everyone. If someone calls you pretentious you can tell them to shove it.”
(Side note for non-bookworms: if a gal is reading a book by herself, she doesn’t want you to talk to her. She wants to read her book and be left alone. Love, someone who reads in public and gets pestered for it frequently.)
Going to shows used to be super awkward for me as a teenager who didn’t know how to talk to other human beings. I still don’t really know how to talk to people, but I am over the age of 21 now and can purchase alcohol. And that is that.

Last-minute show announcement: Panaderia plays the VFW tomorrow, Tuesday, along with esteemed guests like Tiny Plastic Stars, Weathermen, Bull Market and Jay Walter. Panaderia’s a new project from the dude behind Pizza Time; I’m not sure if Panaderia has recorded anything but you can go check out Pizza Time and get a jist of what he’s about, I suspect. Garage punk about pizza! Where can you go wrong?
In other pizza-related news, I had a measly four slices at Total Feast last night at Biga before I tapped out. Also, attending these things sober reminds me how lousy I am at normal human interaction.
In non-Missoula happenings, there’s new tunes out lately from former Latterman peeps, including a song from Iron Chic and Tender Defender. I have mixed feelings about Tender Defender’s name but the tuneage is way solid. If you’re into RVIVR/Iron Chic-esque anthemic rock and roll, anyway.
In TV happenings: I have not watched the season finale of True Detective yet, but as soon as I do, I’m going to go read the Awl’s Moments From True Detective, Ranked, because it’s definitely the most incisive and biting commentary of the show yet. And it’s just literal quotes from the stupid show. The stupid show that I have religiously watched with buddies every Monday.
Which reminds me, here’s excellent crime fiction you should be reading instead of watching garbage television. Or after watching garbage television. Either way. I finished “Girl On The Train” while at home by myself late at night and then had terrible nightmares. It’s great.

You heard it here first: your faithful editor is avoiding all bars and alcohol-related events until Total Fest. This is primarily a money-saving endeavor with a side of “I am becoming old and boring.”
Anyway, there are still things happening without me (gasp!) such as Chicago’s White Mystery tonight at Stage 112, Michigan’s Heaters at Stage 112 Tuesday, Minneapolis’ Oaks at the VFW on Wednesday, and so forth. Richard Dreyfest is in Billings this weekend and it is just about the only valid reason to go to the Tragic City. Here’s a Dreyfest comp on Bandcamp that you can download for free.
Me? I’m gonna be finishing the Wet Hot American Summer prequel and hanging out with my new boyfriend, Paul Rudd.
P.S., if you go to Billings for Dreyfest, stop by Angry Hank’s brewery, too. They make their own version of Old English called “Hobo Gold.” It will make you believe in heaven.
